Guidance Class: It's OK to make mistakes!

Once a month Ms. Siripalaka comes to our class to teach a guidance lesson.  Today she read a book called Beautiful Oops.  Students learned that it's OK to make mistakes and that mistakes can even turn into something beautiful!  They then had their chance to turn a squiggle into a creative picture.

Arctic Animal Sharing!!!

We have been working very hard during our Science/Writing time on our Arctic Animal Unit! We are finally complete:-) We studied the polar bear, walrus, seal, arctic fox, snowy owl, and penguin! The Science unit ties in nicely with our study of nonfiction literature and informational writing.  To wrap up our unit, we invited some kindergartners to come into room this morning so that our first grade students could teach THEM all about Arctic Animals!!!!  (The students ALWAYS love when THEY can be the "teacher.")

Front Row Math!

Our students are piloting a software application called FRONT ROW at school to help personalize their Math skills!  This is in addition to our everyday Math instruction. The program is designed to help each student practice Math skills at his or her level, making sure every student improves at math. We will be sending home a special note with your child in their green envelope so that you can sign up for a FREE parent account in FRONT ROW.  You will be able to see detailed information about where you child is in math, and what you can do to encourage improvement.

We have been using FRONT ROW for about three weeks and so far have seen great results!!  Your children are very excited as well as they move through the levels and achieve their goal!

Valentine's Day Party!

We had a very exciting day and the students enjoyed getting to hand out their valentines, play some "Minute-to-Win-it" games, and then getting to open their own valentines.  Thank you to everyone who brought something to make our day so much fun. We appreciate it!

Students had one minute to see how many candy corns they could get to stand up!

Students had one minute to see how many mini marshmallows they could get into the coffee filter.

Students had one minute to see how many large candy hearts they could stack up.

Students had one minute to see how many hearts they could carry on their spoon to another cup.

Thank you to Mrs. Gross for the creative, beautiful, healthy snack!

Compare and Contrast with Venn Diagrams!

This morning during our Literacy time we learned about simple comparing/contrasting using Venn diagrams.  We started out by comparing Mrs. Keifenheim to Ben..how are we similar/different.  Then we compared Clara and Caden....both have blonde hair, both are in 1st grade, etc.  Their assignment was then to go with their partner and complete their OWN Venn Diagram with a friend:-) Too cute!
