Vocabulary Parade! WHAT is it? :-)

First Grade Vocabulary Parade
Friday, May 8th from 8:15-8:30
example of a student who chose the word "heavy" and his visual depiction

The first grade students will participate in their FIRST Vocabulary Parade on Friday, May 8th at 8:15. Students have been working all year on improving their reading and math skills, and a Vocabulary Parade is the perfect way to celebrate their hard work!
Parents are asked to get involved with the parade by assisting their children in choosing a word and then creating a visual depiction of the word. The visual representation could be as simple as holding up a picture that demonstrates their word or a more creative costume.  There are many samples online if you type in “vocabulary parade images”.
A note was sent home today and a “planner” is included with it. This is a good tool to help the child think about the word they’ve chosen and what it means. Parents are encouraged to use this tool with their children.  WE encourage your child’s creativity!!!
The idea for a Vocabulary Parade came from Debra Fraiser.  She is the author of the book, Miss Alaineus, A Vocabulary Disaster, where a student confuses the word “miscellaneous” for the name Miss Alaineus.

St. Patricks Day Treat-Rainbow Fruit Skewers

In honor of Saint Patrick's Day (next Tuesday) we would like to make a special treat while we work on our Leprechaun Writing project! I will take care of picking up the fruit on Monday, but I am looking for one parent to cut up the strawberries, pineapple, and kiwi on Monday night. There isn't a lot of fruit to cut.  Just 2 cartons of strawberries, a pineapple, and 3/4 kiwi. THANKS!

Our Class is Publishing a Book!

I am proud to tell you that your child's work will be featured in a a hardbound book, ALL ABOUT ANIMALS (created by our class)!  This will be a treasured keepsake in our classroom library for years to come! There will be information coming home on Thursday if you wanted to order a copy for home:-)  We have done this every year and we still have students that will stop in to say that was one of their favorite things they did in 1st grade and that they still will look through their "published" book:-)

Here was the project:
Our students chose an animal last week that they wanted to learn more about.  They checked out books from the library and have been reading/studying their animal for the past week and sharing their facts with fellow classmates.  Today was the BIG DAY to start officially working on our class book that will soon be published!  (The kids were VERY excited to be "real" authors today!) Each student wrote a one page piece & illustration about their selected animal.  We had students writing about a lion, manatee, snake, panda bear, dolphin, etc.  (Everyone had a different animal.) We will finish by Friday and will have a class "celebration" when the book arrives!!!!

Read Across America Week Peformance!

This morning we got to enjoy a performance by Mr. Mike Mathes.  The students loved it and got to sing along.  Many of them were bopping along with the beat.  He also shared his love for reading and sang some original songs he wrote himself.  It was a fun time!
